MANAGING EDITOR

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Join a growing public media organization in one of the most awe-inspiring areas of the country -  the heart of the snowcapped Rocky Mountains. The Managing Editor is the leader and chief editor of Aspen Public Radio’s newsroom, overseeing news staff, production, and output of news on all platforms. This position will lead the development of the staff’s professional skills and performance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

News Strategy: Helps set strategic priorities and goals for the news operation, including
platform, topics and beats, and geographic coverage priorities. Ensures all Aspen Public Radio
news content is accurate, engaging, ethical and produced with the highest standards of
professional journalism. Must have experience in tracking real-time and long-term analytics.
Works in conjunction with the Executive Director and Program Manager to develop and
execute public affairs programs and podcasts.

The Managing Editor helps reporters hone and improve their craft, is creative and insightful
into craft and the more concrete, fact-based elements of radio journalism and high-quality,
sound-rich reporting.

Duties:

  • Edit and supervise the news staff on a daily basis
  • Oversees quality and content of news offerings, serving as gate keeper and “final say”
    over what leads become stories
  • Assign reporting and producing tasks including special series and projects
  • Responsible for producing their own regular reporting, but serving as an editor and
    manager is the priority
  • Design and implement story editing processes, quality standards and other aspects
    related to allocation of story production and priority
  • Assist in developing, and ultimately overseeing, the implementation of the editorial
    focus, process and design
  • Working with the Program Manager, develop and oversee execution of a content distribution strategy to include broadcast, online and social media
  • Work with the news team and regional NPR editors on regular participation in
    nationalizing a regional story
  • Create, maintain and execute plans for coverage of crises and breaking news, working
    with the Program Manager and other station departments as appropriate
  • Serves as one of the back-up hosts to drive time shifts
  • Fundraise, assist with, and attend and major donor events, on-air fund drives and grant
    writing as needed
  • Represent the news division as needed at board meetings and other presentations
  • Oversee team of three reporters, occasional interns and freelancers
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

Management: Strong leadership skills, including the ability to build an effective team by
teaching, training and developing journalists. The Managing Editor will effectively communicate orally and in writing, possess active listening skills, readily adapt to change, champion innovation, develop collaborative partnerships, set goals, hold team members responsible, and achieve results. Must be able to collaborate and foster positive relationships with colleagues.

Community Engagement: Works with the Development and Community Engagement Manager and Program Manager on developing and executing regular, meaningful and engaging news events throughout our listening area such as Town Hall meetings, debates, community forums, listening sessions, etc.

Required Qualifications

  • At least two years of professional journalism experience and deep knowledge of the
    ethics and practices of journalism
  • At least one year of team management and editorial experience
  • Experience working on audio and digital platforms
  • Deep understanding of the purpose and mission of public broadcasting
  • Strong time management skills
  • Excellent leadership, training and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • On-air and/or program/podcast hosting experience
  • Public Radio experience
  • Knowledge of Western Slope Colorado and issues of the West
  • Content collaboration experience
  • A sense of humor always helps

This is a full-time salaried position reporting to the Executive Director requiring availability for
weekend, day, evening, and holiday shifts. APR offers full-time staff benefits including
employer-paid health insurance, 401k match, and paid vacation. Ski pass financing, shared
passes to world-class events such as the Aspen Film Festival, Aspen Institute Ideas Festival and Classical Music Festival are provided. Salary is based in the mid-upper $60k range. This position is based at our Aspen, CO studios. Aspen Public Radio is an equal opportunity employer.
