Lead TV Transmission Ops Tech

New Mexico PBS/KNME-TV, a department of the University of New Mexico, is seeking a Lead TV Transmission Ops Tech to join our RF engineering team.
Under minimal supervision, this position executes and/or coordinates the design, installation and maintenance of all remote television transmitters, as well as all unstaffed station translator sites and satellite sites distributed across the broadcasting area of the University`s public television station, KNME-TV.
The candidate will develop, manage and coordinate construction projects and oversee ongoing technical operations for the station`s transmission network, as well as maintaining documentation in accordance with FCC regulations and University policies and procedures. This position has an expectation of being available in the event of equipment malfunction requiring emergency repairs. This position requires knowledge of broadcast system circuitry design/installation, as well as the ability to inspect, repair and maintain electrical equipment and facilities. Must be able to use hand and power tools and follow safety best practices.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversees and coordinates the installation and maintenance of the station`s statewide transmission network.
- Plans, implements, and oversees procedures for the operation and maintenance of studio, remote control, and RF transmission equipment.
- Performs and/or coordinates activities concerned with the layout and design of electrical circuitry, to ensure conformance with appropriate codes and safety regulations.
- Designs and implements computer documentation software for remote transmitter and satellite systems.
- Plans and oversees transmission construction projects, to include development and upgrades; monitors and coordinates the work of outside contractors engaged in construction projects, as appropriate.
- Acts as a source of technical advice and consultation to internal and external individuals and agencies on associated technical and operational issues.Leads, guides, and trains staff, students, and/or interns, engaged in broadcast related activities.
- Maintains and verifies all necessary records, logs, and reports required by FCC and local and state agencies.
- Troubleshoots RF transmission equipment to component level, and effects repairs as appropriate; provides a variety of alternative solutions to complex transmission problems, and advises and assists in the implementation of solutions.
- Maintains current knowledge of state-of-the-art transmission technology, equipment, and procedures, to ensure the continued efficient and cost-effective operation of the station`s broadcast transmission facilities.
- Works a flexible schedule on a regular basis, to include weekend shifts as assigned; maintains an on-call availability on a rotating basis.
- May supervise personnel, which may include recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: SBE Certification
- Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Records maintenance skills.
- Ability to design, install, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot and/or repair television Radio-Frequency (RF) broadcast equipment.
- Knowledge of broadcast systems circuitry design and/or installation.
- Ability to coordinate and/or supervise independent contractors.
- Organizing and coordinating skills.
- Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule on a regular basis.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to write and prepare computer software, technical documentation, and procedures in area of specialty.
- Knowledge of FCC and other federal, state and local broadcasting regulations.
- Ability to test systems and/or operations in compliance with published regulation, guidelines, and/or standards.
- Ability to provide technical training to staff and/or students in area of expertise.
- Technical problem solving skills within area of specialty.
Conditions of Employment
- Possession of a valid New Mexico driver`s license is a requirement for this job.
- Must obtain certification within one (1) year from date of hire.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- Work involves exposure to high altitudes, extreme temperatures, and other unusual elements related to outdoor environments; work requires frequent operation of 4-wheel drive vehicles and/or snow cats.
- Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
