Master Control Operators are responsible for monitoring the quality and accuracy of the on-air product. They ensure signal transmission meets government regulations which include both technical ones (such as those against audio over-modulation and dead air), as well as content ones (such as indecency and station identification). They troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, and prepare programming for future playback.
Essential Duties of a Master Control Operator:
Operate broadcast systems and related equipment, such as Avid Sundance automation and Omneon Video Servers.
Verify accuracy and on-air readiness of scheduled material by checking traffic log and automation playlist.
Manually operate equipment during high-pressure situations such as human and equipment error to recover on-air in the shortest time possible.
Knowledge and adherence to department Standard Operating Procedures and company policies.
Set up incoming satellite feeds, route signal paths and schedule ingest records.
Digitize promos, commercials, PSA’s and various programming for on-air playback.
Utilize video and audio scopes to accurately gauge and adjust levels appropriately.
Create accurate and detailed reports of on-air discrepancies.
Report problems to appropriate contact to correct issues in a timely manner.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must have ability to perform accurately with strict deadlines, while under pressure and without direct supervision. Candidate should have above average skills in communications and multitasking. Ability to handle high stress environments and working as a team. Must possess general knowledge of computers and broadcast standards.
Physical Requirements: Strength and coordination sufficient to perform job duties and work in cramped spaces. Hearing, vision, depth perception, and hand-to-eye coordination sufficient to perform job duties. Visual and auditory acuity necessary to operate equipment and identify color-coding. Ability to tolerate temperature, weather extremes and low light conditions.
Working Conditions: Inside/outside work; noise; standing; hot/cold temperatures; cramped quarters; angry customers or employees; travel; flexible schedules; overtime, weekend and holiday.
One year of experience within a television broadcasting environment. Up to six months experience as a Master Control Operator highly desired.
Level of Education required to meet minimum qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent is required. Associate’s degree, vocational certificate or equivalent work experience preferred.
Driving Requirements (if applicable): Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
