News Operations Manager

The news operations manager reports to the VP/News Director and Assistant News Director. This person is responsible for the day-to-day news and administrative operation. Supervises all field operations for WJZY/WMYT, including the supervision of all field crews for News and "Good Day Charlotte" and Editors; Also responsible for the booking, scheduling and assigning of personnel and equipment for all field related operations; Assists in the evaluation, budgeting and purchasing of all field related equipment. Maintains equipment and constantly monitors systems for accountability. Oversees all aspects of news coverage including daily assignments, coverage of big events, as well as planning; Responsible for the manner in which breaking news is covered and how the desk reacts to big stories; trains, coaches and monitors the progress of Digital Journalists and Photojournalists. Maintains and troubleshoots all newsroom equipment. Helps plan special projects including special programming and live remote shows. Works closely with Production Operations Manager. Has working knowledge of newsroom budget and A/P invoice system. Assists in the development of story ideas and execution; Manages all news video including feeds for quality control. Resolves technical and editorial problems within editing. Manages video archiving for news purposes and FCC regulations. Oversees news dubs for clients, subpoenas and other programming. Maintains strong and close working relationship with news management team to resolve problems and create and execute new ideas. Remains knowledgeable on current events. Stays current on station technology as well as other technologies for potential inclusion in WJZY operations. Evaluates new technology and make recommendations for budgets. Edits for newscasts and special projects. Reports to work to assist with newscasts outside the normal work schedule at times of severe weather conditions or breaking news. Assists with staff performance appraisal process. Maintains and tracks all equipment assigned to news staff. Maintains systems for accountability and quality control. Acts as a liaison between BitCentral. Functions as liaison between News, Engineering and IT Departments. Coordinates purchase, maintenance and repair of all station cell phones and air cards, and other equipment. Assembles, maintains and distributes internet transmission tools and laptop-to-go kits. Trains news staff on internet transmission tools. Maintains user interface and trains staff with the FOX Fiber News Network. Complies with all FTS computer requirements – myfoxpay, Navigator training, password protection, etc. Complies with all FTS and Station policies. Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in all aspects of field operations. ENG/Production Photographer and KA truck operation, Knowledge of automobile and truck repair, Knowledge of newsroom computer systems, satellite and microwave news, gathering. Good interpersonal and communication skills required, Minimum two years management experience preferred. Must possess strong leadership/motivational skills. Must be excellent teacher and coach.
Regularly stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
