KSL TV Reporter (On-Call)

JOB DESCRIPTION:
POSITION OBJECTIVE: Report news stories and events as assigned for regularly scheduled newscasts and any special reports (bulletins, documentaries, series, investigative reports) and back-up anchor as needed. NOTE: This is a general assignment news reporter posting. Management will assign responsibilities on a regular and/or rotating basis depending upon need and proven capabilities and the need to provide expertise for the future.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Expeditiously and effectively prepare accurate and fair stories.
  2. Ability and willingness to cover any story assigned.
  3. Write, produce, and report on air stories as scheduled by News Division Management, which follow proper procedures with respect to script form, cues, times, video and audio instructions, labels, etc.
  4. Maintain on-going contact with news sources in area of assignment. Be alert and suggest assignments and story coverage possibilities to News Director and/or Assignment Editor on duty.
  5. Act professionally and courteously and dress appropriately for the event assigned to cover.
  6. Assure a full compliment of equipment assigned to reporters is available for special assignment work.
  7. Work effectively as a team member in a team environment. Be helpful and supportive of other members on the team.
  8. Meet "on-call" requirements.
  9. Effectively handle any type of story or situation.
  10. Valid driver's license and proven ability to safely drive company vehicle or personal vehicle (as case may be) without exposing the company to serious liability risks.
  11. Return pools cars clean and ready for use by others.
  12. Ability to accept direction and be flexible with changes in the industry and deal with stress in a way that doesn't detract from own or others effectiveness.
  13. Maintain confidentiality by not discussing internal KSL matters, company strategies, client's proprietary information, personnel matters, wage and salary information or any other sensitive information with clients, competitors, listeners, and the media or inappropriately with co-workers, and by not distributing company's proprietary research or other information to competitors.
  14. Consistently works hours required. Works more when required to meet deadlines including odd hours, weekends, holidays, overtime, etc. Schedule may vary with assignments.
  15. Maintain a positive and cooperative rapport with staff, management, and clients.
  16. Work in compliance with Company policies and procedures.
  17. Project an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor.
  18. Personal growth and development.
  19. Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Substantial physical movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks.
  • Lift, move, and carry up to 25 pounds on occasion.
  • Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
  • Extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction with good eye and hand coordination.

REQUIREMENTS:

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • College degree related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Five years (5) commercial broadcast TV journalism/reporting experience or equivalent.
  • Ability to conceptualize stories for Television presentation and write, produce and stand-up report such stories for either tape or live camera. Proven ability for accuracy and follow-through.
  • Acceptable on-air presence and voice quality including ability to exude confidence and project a professional image performance wise and with respect to dress and demeanor. Able to enunciate clearly and have the ability to read copy fluently.
  • Willingness to accept responsibility and work under minimal supervision. Ability to take initiative and show innovation in problem solving.
  • Self-starter, capable of performing under pressure particularly during peak hours to meet job deadlines as the services performed affect the ability of others in the department to do their work.
  • An in-house audition writing and covering a story under the direction of KSL News may be required.
