KTUU, an award-winning station in Anchorage, Alaska, is seeking a full-time Digital Director/Managing Editor who will be responsible for managing the daily editorial operations of all the station’s web sites and digital platforms. This individual will work with the News Director to increase and enhance KTUU’s digital content, highlighting what’s most important and interesting. The Digital Director supervises a small team of digital producers and works directly with reporters and photojournalists to generate content on a daily basis. He/She will work on special projects and aim to generate content specifically for web and mobile platforms, as well as manage a sound media presence. We’re seeking a candidate with a minimum of three years’ related experience, preferably in news. A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or a related field is required, as is a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Principal Duties & Responsibilities: •Work with news and sales department heads to set content consumption goals. •Effectively determine placement of stories to ensure visibility for crucial reports. •Responsible for gathering, writing, reporting, and managing the process of delivering local news and features in multi-media form to the websites in a timely manner. •Proofread web content. •Responsible for writing clearly, concisely and conversationally for web. •Handle general site maintenance. •Build new web pages and other development projects. •Assist in developing new methods to make web sites more readable and easier to navigate. •Constantly strive to produce content to enhance stories reported on regularly scheduled newscasts and daily website content. •Research and brainstorm story ideas and articulate the ideas so that others understand your vision. •Supervision digital news team and digital duties of newsroom staff. •Act as a leader in facilitating teamwork of staff members. •Work with the marketing and sales departments to ensure programming, contests and promotions are current. •Maintain knowledge of current events and community issues. •Provide digital training to staff, and strive to constantly improve digital products. •Oversee social media presence of station brands. •Manage and develop mobile platforms. •Ensure daily promotional material is updated on digital platforms. •Work with staff to explore and use social media sites to distribute content. •Perform other duties as assigned by the News Director. •Attend weekly department managers meetings. •Produce in-depth interactive sections for major news stories, events and holidays. •Work closely with other media outlets inside and Outside Alaska to generate content. •Recruit freelance writers and columnists to write meaningful in-depth stories and guest columns.
Required Skills & Abilities: •Familiar with SEO & social media best practices. •Computer and Digital media competency. •HTML and Flash training. •Knowledge of coding for web pages and apps, some training will be provided. •Able to use content management systems and other systems to produce web, app, and social media content. •Ability to communicate effectively. •Ability to write clearly and accurately. •Able to be creative and create compelling content. •Strong proofreading skills. •AP Stylebook proficiency. •Must represent station with professionalism and integrity. •Able to manage, mentor, and lead a team of digital producers. •Must possess an intimate knowledge of news operations and journalism. •Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, yet committed to team environment. •Must maintain a high level of confidentiality. •Willingness to work flexible hours and possess ability to work well with co-workers. •Ability to guide others to get the outcome you need. •Strong news judgment. •Ability to handle and adjust accordingly to last-minute changes. •Strong initiative and attention to detail. •Ability to keep up with national and local news/weather/sports. •Understanding of, and ability to follow and enforce, the journalistic code of ethics. •Previous experience with IB CMS is a plus. •Able to edit video and audio on industry standard equipment.
