KTVA-TV Chief Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Purpose of Position: Responsible for the operation of television broadcast technical equipment and facilities ensuring a continuous operation and broadcast transmission quality for the station. The Chief Engineer will provide vision and leadership for engineering personnel while working closely with the Director of Engineering in strategy and planning for the station. Position’s Customer(s): Director of Engineering, senior staff, clients and members of the viewing audience. Position reports to: Director of Engineering and Operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Duties of Position: •40% Assist Director of Engineering and Operations with managing all technical and operational aspects of the Denali Media Holdings Studios and Transmitter facilities. •20% Work with other departments to facilitate completion of all technical projects. •20% Maintain all FCC documents and stay current with FCC requirements for all transmitters and microwave facilities. •20% Oversee other engineers and help set priorities for ongoing projects.

REQUIREMENTS:
Job Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: •Proficient IT skills related to modern automation, encoding, and video play out systems. •Solid understanding of ATSC Transport Streams and related technology. •Experience with TV transmitters and traditional microwave links. •Skilled in all facets of project management. •Demonstrated knowledge of FCC Broadcast rules and regulations and record keeping. •Proven ability to successfully plan, coordinate, and execute tactically and strategically. •Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills including outstanding communication skills both verbal and written. •Demonstrated ability to adjust to competing demands from multiple directions, and balance shifting priorities. •Demonstrated ability to manage through difficult and stressful situations, work under deadline pressure. •Experience with live studio and field production. •Strong PC and Mac computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook. Years of Experience required to meet minimum qualifications: Minimum six years’ experience in broadcast engineering at a broadcast, video production or cable television facility, performing hands on work on productions and live events, maintaining and updating infrastructure. Minimum of three years’ experience managing technical staff and projects including part-time and contract staff with demonstrated ability to improve performance, output and quality. Level of Education required to meet minimum qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Technology or equivalent required. In addition to minimum experience required, degree may be substituted with relevant work experience on a year for year basis. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and work in cramped spaces and at heights. Hearing, vision, depth perception, and hand-to-eye coordination sufficient to perform job duties. Visual and auditory acuity necessary to operate equipment and identify color-coding. Ability to tolerate temperature and weather extremes (fumes and odors, dust, low light conditions.) Strength and coordination sufficient to perform job duties. Standing for up to two hour at one time, and sitting for extended periods. Working Conditions: Inside/outside work. Work outside the facility and in all seasons is often required. Outside work will be in all weather conditions in Alaska as well as remote locations involving harsh arctic environments. Must be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as needed. Driving Requirements (if applicable): A good driving record is required for this position. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of personal liability auto insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
