Multimedia Journalist/Weekend Meteorologist

Work hours schedule: Weekends and three days during the week

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Brief description of duties & responsibilities of Multimedia Journalist:

  1. Reports news stories for broadcast, describing the background and details of events.
  2. Arranges interviews with people who can provide information about stories.
  3. Reviews copy and corrects errors in content, grammar and punctuation, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines.
  4. Reviews and evaluates notes taken about event aspects in order to isolate pertinent facts and details.
  5. Determines a story`s emphasis, length and format, and organizes material accordingly.
  6. Researches and analyzes background information related to news stories in order to be able to provide complete and accurate information.
  7. Gathers information about events through research, interviews, experience or attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, social or other functions.
  8. Pitches stories to news managers and news producers which are relevant to the local community.
  9. Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas.
  10. Discusses issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities or positions.
  11. Checks reference materials such as books, news files or public records to obtain relevant facts.
  12. Revises work to meet editorial approval or to fit time requirements.
  13. Shoots and edits news events and news reports.
  14. Sets up, composes and executes video shots.
  15. Maintains video equipment.
  16. Produces and presents reports for all platforms.
  17. Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
  18. Writes stories for the web and other eMedia platforms.
  19. Edits video clips for television broadcasts and eMedia content.
  20. Interacts with viewers/users on social media sites.
  21. Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
Brief description of duties & responsibilities of Weekend Meteorologist:
  1. Produces and presents weather reports for all platforms.
  2. Ensures that all weather content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
  3. Writes and delivers weather stories in a clear and concise manner.
  4. Assists in writing, copy editing, researching and coordinating weather programming and other content.
  5. Responds to breaking and/or severe weather events and other urgent newsrooms situations as required.
  6. Works closely with the weather team to develop comprehensive weather coverage.
  7. Participates in promotional activities including public appearances.
  8. Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
  9. Writes web stories detailing the local forecast.
  10. Interacts with viewers and users on social media sites.

REQUIREMENTS:
Work experience and education required for position:

  1. Bachelor`s degree in Broadcast Journalism, Meteorology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work related experience.
  2. Strong understanding of the field of meteorology and a proven track record of forecasting.
  3. Minimum two years` experience in news reporting. (More or less depending on market size.)
  4. Superior on-air presence.
  5. Proficiency with video recording equipment.
  6. Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment.
  7. Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  8. Ability to effectively listen to fully understand problems and communicate with a team to shape a solution.
  9. Valid driver`s license with a good driving record.
  10. Flexibility to work any shift.
Special Skills Required:
  1. Fluency in English.
  2. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required.
