KTUU-TV News Reporter

JOB DESCRIPTION:
KTUU, a nationally award-winning station in Anchorage, Alaska, is seeking a Reporter who has a love for "storytelling." This individual is responsible for developing, investigating, writing, reporting and editing stories of interest, both for television and all of KTUU`s digital platforms. Reporters must generate stories and source contacts, work "beats" as assigned and enterprise stories on a daily basis, in addition to delivering reports of high visual and ethical standards, using creative ideas and our live technical capabilities from the field. The position offers a competitive salary, as well as a comprehensive benefit package, including group health, PTO and 401(k).

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Research, gather and provide news and information in the most accurate, appealing, timely and creative way, using all sources.
  • Enterprise hard-news, research-driven pieces under tight deadlines.
  • Develop and maintain sources of information and knowledge about assignments.
  • Write and produce stories for daily newscasts and on station`s digital platforms.
  • Post and regularly update stories, often remotely, while traveling.
  • Conduct interviews in the field and on-set.
  • Report 'live' on the scene.
  • Must update social media sites daily, including Facebook and Twitter, to report stories and interact with viewers.
  • Participate in story selection process through editorial and planning meetings; contributing unique story ideas daily.
  • Enterprise and produce stories.
  • Cover a news "beats," as assigned, and make regular beat checks.
  • Demonstrate sound news judgment; collaborate with other staff members to present the story in the most effective manner possible.
  • Ability to shoot television video; one-man band capabilities is preferred. Able to utilize non-linear editing equipment on a regular basis. (KTUU will provide training, as needed.
  • Communicate with KTUU`s digital staff and other appropriate staffers during breaking news.
  • Ability to follow clothing and appearance guidelines.
  • Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Perform other incidental and related duties as assigned.
  • Represent the station at public events.
  • Produce one daily reporter package and one vo/sot/vo or other contribution on a daily basis.
  • Possess a broad and working knowledge of the viewing area, including people, places, things, and history.
  • Enter CG text and times into newsroom software 30 minutes prior to newscasts.

REQUIREMENTS:
Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent live reporting skills; ability to ad-lib during breaking news.
  • Ability to do active and involved live shots and stand-ups.
  • Strong on-camera presentation skills.
  • Excellent interview and communication skills.
  • Able to write in a clear, concise, and conversational manner.
  • Strong research skills, including the ability to navigate online search engines.
  • Strong initiative and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer knowledge including newsroom software, online CMS system, Microsoft applications and the Internet (Training will be provided for newsroom software and CMS systems).
  • Ability to work well with others and independently with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrate solid journalistic ethics.
  • Must possess web writing skills.
  • Basic knowledge of social media.
  • Ability to break-out stories with extensive anchor tags.
  • Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving in a manner that reflects well on the station - including collaboration with co-workers, supervisors, and responding to viewers and news consumers in person and via email and social media.
  • Dedication to remaining current on national and local news.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Must thrive on working during big breaking news, extensive weather events and special event coverage.

*We`re seeking someone with 1-3 years of reporting experience.
*A college degree is required, preferably in Journalism or a related field.
*A valid driver`s license, with a good driving background, is also required. Offers of employment are contingent upon a pre-employment background check.
