JOB DESCRIPTION:

Copy Editor. FLSA: Non-Exempt.   

Purpose of Position: Works under moderate supervision with some latitude for independent judgment. Edits, checks, and prepares written material for publication, performing a variety of duties.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Duties of Position:

Edit materials for multi-media including digital media, websites and Follow guidelines for consistency in words, phrases, and typographical elements.

Check for libel or factual errors. May re-write content.
Reads proofs/ copy to detect errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
Verifies facts, dates, and statistics using standard reference sources.
Rewrites or modifies copy to conform to style and editorial policy.
May confer with authors regarding changes made to manuscript.
Creation of original concepts that will result in effective and compelling communication.
Work on special digital projects.

REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and track changes.
Excellent attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and provide accurate results in a short amount of time
Professional writing and communication skills
Excellent reading comprehension and editorial skills
Strong organization and attention to detail
Knowledge of social media platforms, analytics, reporting tools, and best content marketing practices
Ability to work under intense pressure and tight deadlines.
Requires moderate skill sets and developing proficiency within discipline.
Ability to work with limited supervision.
Knowledge of station guidelines and code of ethics.
Must be technically astute, highly organized and have a reputation for meeting deadlines.
Ability to collaborate within and outside your department in a stressful environment.
Must be able to perform other duties as assigned.

Technical:

Knowledge of MS Office and other common office tools software required.
Knowledge of AP ENPS News System.
Knowledge of website CMS used in the newsroom.
Ability to understand and quickly apply new technology.

Strong verbal communication skills, particularly in the ability to communicate with all levels of the organization and the public.
Must be able to reconcile divergent demands of multiple parties under tight timelines.
Proven ability to collaborate within and outside assigned department and create an effective working environment for high traffic and/or potentially stressful workloads.
Excellent active listening skills with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical staff required.
Self directed and takes the initiative on issues affecting the organization.

Neat, clean, professional appearance.

Years of Experience required to meet minimum qualifications: Minimum two (2) or more years experience in  journalism, or as a copywriter or a related field required

 

Level of Education required to meet minimum qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent is required.  Bachelor Degree in Journalism or related field, such as English, Creative Writing, Marketing, Communications required; a combination of education or experience sufficient to perform the duties may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year for year basis.

Certifications Required: Industry specific certifications are highly valued and can contribute toward education.

Position reports to: Assistant News Director

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform sedentary work.  Physical effort may include stooping, kneeling, touching, feeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Clarity of vision to see near, mid-range, and color. Ability to lift and carry up to (25) lbs.

Working Conditions: Inside/outside work; noise; standing; hot/cold temperatures; cramped quarters; angry customers or employees; travel; flexible schedules; overtime, weekend and holiday.The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the normal business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. As such, you will be requested to provide emergency after hours contact numbers, to include your home and cell phone numbers if you have those services.

Driving Requirements (if applicable): Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
